Blowing It – by Jim Bratten

The Republican Party leadership caves and compromises toward its own demise. And they are misreading election results to speed the self-destruction.

In the recent Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races on November 7, the chances of a GOP victory in either was slim. But Ed Gillespie could have narrowed the margin in Virginia and possibly won if he had left his establishment credentials behind and asked for Trump’s endorsement. By the time he began to publicly embrace the Trump agenda (for political reasons only) it was too late to have any effect. Ralph Northam (D) beat him by nine points for the office.

Virginia has become an even stronger blue state in recent years, due to the effects of Governor Terry McAuliffe’s drive for felon voting rights, efforts in the state to attract illegal aliens (who vote illegally) and the greater saturation of the northern seven counties with progressive bureaucrats who work for the federal government. Yet on December 17, the Wall Street Journal editorial staff still believed that Gillespie lost because of Trump, not because he was a Bushie or the increased Democrat turnout.

The race in New Jersey wasn’t even a possibility for a Republican win after the trail left by Governor Chris Christie. Democrat Phil Murphy won the office with ease.

GOP “consultants” and strategists are making the same error with the Alabama results from last week, blaming the election loss on Judge Roy Moore, and Donald Trump’s endorsement, not on a complete lack of RNC support and the efforts by Republican elites to torpedo the Roy Moore campaign. Unknown Democrat candidate Doug Jones won by 23,000 votes, or 1.7%.

If they keep this up, they’ll lose seats in the 2018 primaries – hopefully to be replaced by conservatives who are interested in the reasons why Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016 and what the conservative base actually thinks and believes. And in getting things done.

That, and understanding the belief of the Democrat elites that Republicans are a bigger enemy than the Islamic State…
