Apollo 8’s Broadcast – by Jim Bratten

Jim Bratten

Christmas Eve, 1968 saw millions of Americans glued to their television sets as they watched three Apollo 8 astronauts transmit blurred images of the lunar surface and narrate during their mission – ten orbits of the moon.

Jim Lovell, Bill Anders, and Frank Borman each took turns reading the first ten verses of the first chapter of Genesis as they witnessed the lunar sunrise from their tiny orbiting capsule.

Anders began, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth… And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light…”

Frank Borman closed the broadcast from the moon to the earth with a final salutation:

“And, from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you – all of you on the good earth.”

Their mission broadcast was a Christmas gift to all Americans.
