Letter to the Editor: A Black Eye for Evansville – by Jean Witte

First of all I want to thank you for getting the real news to the people! I enjoy your paper very much.

My concern today is the problem at the University of Evansville. I have been following the story of blatant discrimination concerning Jalen Chestnut vs the administrator Dr. Robert Dion and the fact that no one seems to give a ‘rats rear end’!! I care!!

This is a university that the city and the state should be proud of. As long as I have been in Indiana (came here in 1949), I have known people who have attended what was Evansville College, then became University of Evansville. I knew it to be a Christian school where many, even some of my relatives, have studied religion without repercussions. Why now???

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke

I believe this school is still connected to the Methodist Church. I was raised in the Methodist Church and felt like a Christian, so my question is… where is the Methodist Church in this controversy? If this is still a Christian school, how did it acquire a man like Dr. Dion, who says openly that he hates Christians? What is the process for hiring an administrator?

Why is our mayor not stepping up to the plate? Maybe I am wrong, but I thought Mayor Lloyd Winnecke to be a Christian. Perhaps I have been taking too much for granted!

It seems to me that if we have a Christian school that has a Christian hater for an administrator, that administrator should have been looking for another job the day after he was hired… or better yet… the day BEFORE he was hired. Something is definitely not right here, and the city of Evansville, as well as the Methodist Church should be ashamed of their inaction!!

Jalen Chestnut should have no problem furthering his religious education in a Christian school regardless of what Professor Dion’s views are. And someone needs to put some pressure on the leaders of the university and the city of Evansville.

Let’s not give our city a black eye. It’s bad enough that we have shenanigans at EVSC, which seems to be letting our students down. Do they really not know how to teach phonics??? No wonder more and more students are being home schooled.

I think Evansville has a really big problem… no make that plural… and I hope the people of Evansville who care about their city will never allow this mess to be swept under the rug!

Oh! I almost forgot how easy it was for the Drag Queen to come to the public library and taint young children’s minds. Maybe we have bigger problems than I thought… WAKE UP EVANSVILLE!!
