The ‘Just Us” System: Deep State’s Problem with Accountability – by Jim Bratten

Evidence that the United States now has a two-tiered system of justice is obvious to anyone who decides to look. Equal justice under law is “old rules.” The new rules are simple in the progressive bureaucratic (deep) state: Trump supporters will be indicted; #Resistance people walk.

Attorney Robert Barnes, tweeting on February 14, nailed it: “If a government official commits an alleged crime to help #DeepState or hurt @realDonaldTrump, they get TV deals, book deals, and immunity. If a government official commits an alleged crime to help @realDonaldTrump, they get prosecuted & punished at an unprecedented level. #McCabe”

After 22 months of investigation into the actions of former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, the DOJ has “decided not to prosecute.” McCabe repeatedly lied to Congress and was fired from the FBI for dishonesty inside the agency. But the charges against him were dismissed by the DOJ. Likewise, regarding charges against former FBI Director James Comey for lying and leaking, the DOJ took a pass.

The FBI has a habit of declining prosecution of its agents; not even a Post-It note in the personnel file or a slap on the wrist for wrongdoing. They are “reassigned,” in spite of their character flaws. There appears to be no standard for behavior, or rules for which violation begets prosecution. Criteria for prosecution of Deep State actors doesn’t seem to exist. They take care of their own.

Deception is widespread throughout the FBI and the DOJ and is accepted as SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). The entire federal bureaucracy seems to be deeply corrupt, its organizational structure corroded beyond repair. And since the advent of the Obama Agenda in 2009, “justice” is now defined by political correctness. There’s no clear path to traditional justice (under rule of law) for those responsible for it.

When corruption is exposed, the “system” moves quickly to obstruct any attempt to investigate, covers up the problem by inventive diversions, or simply buries it and denies it ever existed. The cover-up of Hillary Clinton’s incredibly illegal routing of government communications through a private server, the non-investigation of money laundering through the State Department for the Clinton Foundation, and the bogus accusations against President Trump known as the “Russia Hoax,” are several glaring examples of a corrupt justice system.

Thus far, eleven members of the Deep State have escaped justice: James Comey; Andrew McCabe; James Clapper; John Brennan; Lisa Page; Peter Strzok; James Baker; Bruce Ohr; Nellie Ohr; Dana Boente; and Sally Yates, all appointed bureaucrats. The list grows when you include many State Department officials who assisted with the fraudulent Steele dossier and had a role in enabling the cover-up of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. All of them are unelected careerists.

Compare those fugitives from justice, roaming free, with Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, Carter Page, and George Papadopoulos – all victims of those corrupt, unelected fugitive civil servants.

Identity politics also saturates the Left’s justice system, as it seeks to protect the guilty in favored classes and prosecute the innocent in the disfavored. It matters greatly if you are a Democrat or a Republican, particularly if you support President Donald Trump. If you end up on the wrong side of a progressive FBI agent, or a staunch Democrat DOJ official, you’re toast.

Kim Strassel of the Wall Street Journal explained the Deep State situation: “Career civil servants aren’t some aristocratic class entitled to immunity from supervision. They are employees. The danger isn’t political authority, but rather an unelected mandarin class that believes itself exempt from democratic accountability.”

There are rules for the “Just Us” system of elite bureaucrats and civil servants, and another set of rules for their political targets.
