Opening Up America Again – by Jim Bratten

The White House Coronavirus Task Force presented their “Opening Up America Again” plan last week, the road map to return to some semblance of normalcy in the United States as the Wuhan flu virus scare winds down on the Fear Factor scale.

It’s composed of three phases. Moving from one phase to the next requires evidence of progress; virus cases have to be trending down. Personal hygiene must be maintained. As people return to work, employers must enact social distancing in their workplaces.

Throughout the plan there is to be “robust testing” and “contact tracing,” the latter never done before in this nation. Of course, our American surveillance state has never been this pervasive. If you exhibit signs of the Wuhan flu virus your contacts will be monitored. You will be watched.

Here are the three phases:

Phase 1
• Restaurants, sporting events, gyms and places of worship can reopen with strict social distancing
• Elective surgeries can resume
• Schools and bars must remain closed
• High-risk individuals must remain in their homes or retirement facilities

Phase 2
• Restaurants, sporting events, gyms, and places of worship must follow moderate social distancing guidelines
• Schools and organized activities reopen
• Non-essential travel may resume
• Gatherings of more than 50 people should be avoided
• Bars can open with diminished occupancy

Phase 3
• Employers can resume unrestricted staffing
• Bars can operate with increased standing room
• Vulnerable individuals can resume public interaction with distancing, and… Visits to senior living facilities and hospitals can resume

Wouldn’t it have been preferable to have protected the vulnerable, avoided the fear, and skipped the progressive group-think?
