How Much Does a US Senate Seat Cost? – by Johnny Kincaid

The runoff election for two Georgia senate seats will be the most expensive campaigns in US history. Ad spending in the state is already over a quarter-billion dollars and still growing. According to Ad Age, in the past week alone, the media buys have grown from $101 million to $272.2 million. The candidates are spending about $38 per person to reach the 7 million potential voters (people over 18) in the Peach Tree State.

Most of the ad buys are in the Atlanta area and one TV station in Atlanta will receive more than 20% of the states total advertising dollars ($50.5 million).

The numbers will likely grow even more before the January 5, runoff. Both parties see this a must-win election as it determines the balance of control in the senate. Democrats have committed $102.5 million towards the media buys while Republicans are spending $168.5 million. These numbers do not include the money spent before November 3 or other campaign expenses.

2020 will set a record for overall campaign spending with a national total of over $14 billion.

In the general election, Democrats spent over $300,000,000 in attempts to overthrow some prominent Republican senators, but failed to flip any of the targeted seats.

With the level of importance placed on these two seats, the price tag for buying a senator will likely climb to mind-numbing levels.
