“Bipartisan” Mitch – by Jim Bratten

The Republican Senate leadership gave a gift to Joe Biden last week, so Joe responded by thanking and praising Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on August 10 for his “courage” in supporting the Infrastructure Bill.

During Trump’s White House tenure, Mitch McConnell dragged his feet when he should have been supporting Trump’s desire to pass Republican infrastructure legislation. It should have gotten done, but here’s what McConnell wrote on December 12, 2016, before his new boss was even inaugurated: “What I hope we will clearly avoid, and I’m confident we will, is a trillion-dollar stimulus… We need to do this carefully and correctly, and the issue of how to pay for it needs to be dealt with responsibly.” Using his familiar political-speak, McConnell was clearly reluctant to give Trump any infrastructure bill, or anything else for that matter.

But Mitch did want to “manage” the term of Trump, along with Democrats, not really changing what they both wanted to preserve until Trump left office. So when he heard that Biden wanted a reputation as a “bipartisan” president, Mitch was happy to help. In this infrastructure debacle, he agreed to Biden’s bipartisan ruse. Now that Biden has the bipartisan bonafides, he can be as radical as he wants. Senator Tim Kane (D-VA) called the Infrastructure Bill the “Bipartisan Bill.”

The Wall Street Journal of August 11 revealed: “McConnell Credits Biden for Infrastructure Breakthrough, Dismisses Trump Criticism.” The piece quoted McConnell: “I think the president deserves a lot of credit for getting the Democrats open to reaching a bipartisan agreement on this bill” (emphasis added). “Dismisses Trump”—sounds familiar.

Also on August 11, CNN praised the passage of the reconciliation budget: “Senate passes a $3.5 trillion blueprint for transforming America.” This time, thanks to Republicans, it wasn’t CNN “fake news.” It was real, but Republicans had already taken a knee.

GOP senators who defended the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Bill on the Senate floor pushed the “fake news.” They lied about what it really was; all for bipartisanship.
